Accident kills Byron restaurateur

THE Byron Bay community is in mourning after the tragic death of Caroline Pitt, owner of Thai@ Byron restaurant.

Mrs Pitt, mother of Tanya, Jason and Ryan, grandmother of Jake and Marcus and wife of Tony, died after her Toyota Rav 4 hit a power pole in the early hours of Saturday morning at Byron Bay.

The 56-year-old Suffolk Park resident was much loved by her family, friends and the Byron Bay business community.

“She was the world's greatest mum,” daughter, Tanya Pearson, said.

“She was the most generous and loving person I have ever met. She touched a lot of people's lives. Mum was my best friend. We all love her and will miss her very much.”

Mrs Pitt will also be missed by her friends in the Byron Bay business community.

“I am devastated. I can't tell you how terribly sad and tragic this is for the whole of Byron Bay,” Byron United vice-president and friend, Sevegne Newton, said.

“I knew her very well. When I lost my mother recently she was there for me. She was such a wonderful support. I will never forget the things she said to me.

“Caroline was a most generous and compassionate woman. She was a consummate business person, most loved by her staff and customers, and greatly respected by all who knew her. Her loss to us all is huge, but to her wonderful and close family it is truly devastating.

“She will be greatly missed.”

It is understood Mrs Pitt was driving into Byron Bay to pick up her son when the accident happened.

She was driving north along Bangalow Road shortly before 1am on Saturday when her car allegedly crossed on to the wrong side of the roadway, apparantly narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle.

Her vehicle careered into a power pole and as a result the power pole was dislodged.

She was trapped for a short time before being freed by members of the Volunteer Rescue Association.

Mrs Pitt was treated at the scene and taken to Byron Bay Hospital, but was unable to be resuscitated.

Inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.

Bangalow Road was closed while Country Energy attended to the damaged power pole.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
