Boruc pushes Arsenal to the top of the Premier League

SOUTHAMPTON'S Polish international goalkeeper Artur Boruc played a major part in helping Arsenal move four points clear at the top of the Premier League during the clash between the sides in London.

Fourth-place Southampton, beaten only once previously this season, were holding their own until Boruc tried to dummy his way past Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in the 22nd minute and was dispossessed by the Frenchman, who scored.

Giroud sealed the win from the penalty spot in the 86th minute.

The result means Arsenal has now won five consecutive home games in the league.

Liverpool is second behind the Gunners after drawing 3-3 with Everton in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Daniel Sturridge equalised in the 89th minute for the Reds after Everton had twice come from behind to lead 3-2. Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, scored twice for Everton.

Chelsea won the London derby against West Ham after veteran midfielder Frank Lampard scored twice against his club in the 3-0 triumph at Upton Park.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace climbed off the bottom and above Sunderland after collecting their first away points of the season with a 1-0 victory at Hull, with former Stoke boss Tony Pulis, confirmed as their manager earlier in the day, watching from the stands.

Newcastle won 2-1 at home against Norwich, Sunderland, who had former England defender Wes Brown sent off in the first half, lost 2-0 at Stoke, while Fulham's woes continued with a fourth successive defeat, 2-1 at home to Swansea.
