Abbott warns his MPs against becoming complacent

PRIME Minster-elect Tony Abbott has congratulated Coalition MPs for "winning the trust of the Australian people", but said they now faced the challenge of keeping it.

Ebullient Liberal Party and Nationals MPs came together in Canberra on Friday for the first joint party room meeting since their election triumph on Saturday.

Mr Abbott told his colleagues - including Michelle Landry and Peter Hendy, both of whom only learned on Friday they would in fact prevail in their seats - they could each be "proud" of the part they played in bringing about the "historic change" of government.

But he warned them against becoming complacent, saying the hard work would begin now.

"Our task is but briefly to savour this moment. Our task is to give a great country and a great people the better government that the people of Australia deserve - that is our task," Mr Abbott said.
