MACKAY Regional Council is hoping the botanic gardens can become a major tourism attraction for the region and the community has been invited to have a say on the gardens' future.
A new advisory board was formed late last year to shape the look and feel of Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens over the next 20 years.
The group will undertake a detailed analysis of the $15million future plans for the facility from now to mid-2016.
Chairwoman of the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Advisory Board, Cr Theresa Morgan said the plan would transform the botanic gardens into one of the most significant in regional Australia.
"Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens has the potential to become a major tourism drawcard for the region," Cr Morgan said.
"The advisory board's role is to analyse the plans for the facility to ensure it provides value to the community, not only as a botanic garden but also for tourism, sport and recreation, arts and events and community development and involvement opportunities," she said.
"The current vision for the gardens is based on the 2010 Master Plan, so we want to ensure the precinct is still relevant and aligned with the region's needs," Cr Morgan said.
"We have already taken some positive steps in this direction, recently installing free WiFi in a partnership with a local internet service provider, for visitors to the botanic gardens."
Cr Morgan said members of the advisory board would engage with the community and report back.
The advisory board will provide a forum for council and the community to provide input into the planning, design, development and ongoing management of the gardens.
Some key areas that the advisory board will consider are:
The need to provide spaces and facilities for engagement with native flora and an understanding of the core roles of a botanic garden.
- Elements that set the botanic gardens apart from other regional parks.
- What links the botanic gardens has to the council-wide community facilities network.
- Consideration for programming, funding, staffing and maintenance within council's plans and budgets.
