Gathering marks 10th anniversary of blockade
A sunset gathering on Saturday marked the 10th anniversary of what became known as the Paterson Hill Blockade which led to a prime Byron Bay coastal scenic site being saved from development.
On October 28, 1999 protesters stopped a low loader from taking an excavator on to heathland known as the Detala land where it was planned to build 14 houses.
The Paterson Hill Action group continued the fight until the State Government announced in mid-2003 that it would buy the land, later made part of the Arakwal National Park.
