100 volunteers, 11,414 cuppas: ‘Remarkable’ effort at Yelgun

ONE hundred volunteers, 776 hours and 11,414 cups of tea, coffee or cordial - that's what it took to operate the Yelgun Driver Reviver during the Christmas/new year holiday period.

Operated by members of the Brunswick/ Mullumbimby Lions Club and volunteers for the past 25 years, the Driver Reviver stop is located on the Pacific Highway at the Yelgun truck rest area.

The Driver Reviver started on December 11 last year and was open for a total of 35 days and operated 24 hours, seven days a week.

Chairperson of the Driver Reviver and Lions Club member, Trevor Watts, said 100 volunteers had worked 194 four-hour shifts for a remarkable total of 776 hours.

"The volunteers served 11,404 cups of coffee, tea or cordial," he said. "This is a magnificent effort and I would personally like to thank all the volunteers who did a magnificent job.

"I also want to thank Bushells Tea and Bushells Coffee, Arnotts Biscuits, Toll Transport, Sunrise Sugar and Woolworths Mullumbimby who donated all goods."

Mr Watts said the Driver Reviver was a very important service which had been proven to save lives.

"People can get out of their cars, stretch their legs, have a drink and hopefully get back into their cars refreshed to continue their journey," he said.

The Yelgun Driver Reviver will operate throughout 2016 Queensland and NSW school holidays.
