Work on the Jonson Street fig trees at Byron Bay will start next Tuesday (March 2).

The work will include the enlargement of the garden beds surrounding the figs, installation of root barrier material and root and foliage pruning.

Byron Shire Council’s executive manager community infrastructure, Phil Holloway, said the work was being conducted by a highly experienced arborist and would take a maximum of two days.

“The work will manage the roots disrupting the road and pavement surface and help reduce potential pedestrian trip hazards, while maintaining the health of the trees,” he said.

“Kerbing surrounding the garden beds will also be enlarged.

“The existing pedestrian crossing situated out the front of Australia Post and Railway Park will be temporarily relocated slightly northward during the works.”

Last November the two fig trees had been earmarked for removal because of safety concerns for pedestrians, but they received a stay of execution after many complaints were received from the community.
