Four Oztag players from the Byron Shire will travel to Auckland in March to compete in a series of international Test matches between New Zealand and Australia.

The players, Neil Cameron, Ron Stone, Ray Wakefield and Serge Brecard, are part of the 16-member Australia Over 50s Oztag team.

Five Test matches will be played over three days in Auckland in all age divisions.

Family affair

“We are really looking forward to the challenge,” Neil said.

“A few of us are taking our wives with us, so it will be a real family affair.

“The four of us play in the local Byron Oztag competition and we are all training hard for the Test matches.”

Neil said he was battling a knee injury, so was swimming and walking to keep fit.

“Ron and Ray are both are former rugby league players who were members of the Red Devils, and Serge is the co-ordinator for Oztag in Mullumbimby,” he said.

“I would rate our chances over there as pretty good as Australia has some strong Oztag teams.”

Ray and Serge said they were excited about the competition and were looking forward to some great games.
