THE hunt is on for Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year and locals are being encouraged to nominate their dedicated sporting dads.

Gary Timperley, from the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club, has already received several nominations, including one from his son Jy.

"My dad deserves this award because he is without a doubt the most dedicated human being I know," said Jy. "Whether he is taking me to swimming every morning at 4.45am or training other kids in the afternoons or training himself.

"I have seen my dad up at ridiculous hours trying to figure out programs, routines and even graphs on how hard myself or others kids have been training.

"Taking into consideration that he also has a job, he is training with us between 9-13 times a week.

"This is also all after he has finished up a career as a highly rated ASP professional surfer back in the 1980s. I know my dad deserves this award. He is my inspiration and for others too."

Entries close on Sunday, August 24.
