ALISON Rodgers always knew she wanted to be a mum.
Like most little girls she played with dolls, but as she grew, so did the desire to have a baby.
"The first time I fell in love I knew I wanted to have a baby," Ms Rodgers said.
After that failed relationship and no "Mr Right" in sight, the 32-year-old decided it was time take matters into her own hands.
"I wanted to have a baby more than I wanted to have a partner," she said.
Her mind was made up, so the former Toowoomba State High School student turned to the internet.
It took her six months to find the right sperm donor on the website, freespermdonations.com.
He was a man in his 40s, he had a family of his own, a wife and an organic farm north of Brisbane.
Wil wanted to donate because he still felt the need for more children, but didn't want the "parental burdens" of fathering another baby.
After four failed intrauterine insemination attempts at a fertility clinic, Ms Rodgers finally received what she had always dreamed of: a positive pregnancy test.
"It was only two weeks after the insemination," she said.
"I woke at 3am and needed to go to the bathroom.
"So I thought I may as well to the test.
"I was in the dark, peeing on a stick.
"I put it on the basin. I was totally blasé about the whole thing.
"And in that moment, the words: 'it's a girl' popped into my head.
"It was such a shock.
"I wasn't even thinking about the sex of the baby. I was still overwhelmed that I was pregnant.
"At the 20 week ultrasound and when I found out she was a girl, it was such a confirmation to me that I should trust my instincts."
Roma was born on February 10, 2010.
"I am very close to her," Ms Rodgers said.
"She is very gentle and empathic.
"She loves dolls just like I did."
And despite her unconventional choices, Ms Rodgers said most people were positive when they found out about Roma's conception.
"I am quite open about it," she said.
"I don't want people to assume things.
"I am quite proud of it.
"I have achieved my dream without finding a life partner.
"I hoped it inspires other women to follow their path.
"You don't have to wait for Mr Right."
Ms Rodgers and her donor have written a book about their experiences.
