Moving farewell to tiny Max

WHEN Chloe Mullins and Jac Cadman held their precious son Max Lucas in their arms for the very first time, they knew it was a moment they had to cherish while they could.

As they cradled the tiny baby in their arms, the couple were preparing to farewell the son they had been blessed with for just two days.

Miss Mullins went into labour at just 26 weeks after haemorrhaging while pregnant with not only Max but his two brothers, Bodie Ross and Zach Angus.

The triplets were born via emergency caesarean at the Mater Women and Children's Hospital on June 21.

Just a week later, the family gathered for the funeral of baby Max, who was given the only name the couple had picked before the birth.

"We decided that since he was the smallest, he would have our favourite name, which was Max," Mr Cadman said.

The doting dad said the news that his smallest son was losing blood and in trouble two days after his birth was crushing.

"We went to see him and looking at him he was okay but he wasn't doing well on the inside at all," he said.

Mr Cadman said the loss of a child is something from which you will never recover and the couple knew the road to delivery was not going to be an easy one.

An ultrasound early in the pregnancy revealed there was a second baby tucked inside Miss Mullins' womb. Before the couple could overcome the shock of twins, they were given the news that they had naturally conceived triplets.

Zach and Bodie are getting stronger and despite the devastating loss of their brother, their parents say they are doing well.

"The boys are great and it's hard because you're grateful to have these two little boys but there is also this cloud over you because you know there is one who is not where he is meant to be," Miss Mullins said.

Although the first time the couple got to hold one of their triplets was to say goodbye, Mr Cadman said there are plenty of "happy cuddles" shared between the remaining family members.

The triplets are little brothers to the couple's daughter, Isabelle, 3, who got to cuddle her brother during some of his last moments.

Miss Mullins is expected to stay in hospital for about the next 12 weeks and hopefully by then the babies will be strong enough to come home.

The babies' birth details: Bodie - 1110g, 40cm; Zach - 1030g, 35cm and Max - 940g, 37cm.
