WOMEN are not the only ones tearing up and reaching for the box of tissues while watching a movie. According to a national survey, men are getting teary-eyed too.

The survey found an overwhelming number of Australian men have cried during a movie and 100% of female respondents said they had seen their man shed a tear during a film.

According to the survey, the top 10 tear-jerker movies for men are Marley and Me, Red Dog, Life is Beautiful, Shawshank Redemption, The Notebook, Forrest Gump, Love Actually, Titanic, My Sister's Keeper and Toy Story 3.

Warwick Civic Video owner Andrew Moore admitted he had cried during a movie but would not reveal which one.

"I wouldn't say men would come out and say a movie made them cry," he said.

"They will try and avoid it and say something like that was an emotional or heartfelt movie.

"Men are more likely to tear up in a dark cinema or when watching a movie with their loved one."

Mr Moore said he was not surprised to see Marley and Me and Toy Story 3 on the list.

"Romantic and animal ones will always get people teary eyed," he said.

"Toy Story 3 is the final of a popular trilogy and there is one scene where the characters think they are about to die and they embrace each other satisfied that they will get to die with their friends.

"It is really, really sad and emotional."

Mr Moore said animated movies were more likely to prompt tears.

"It makes it easier to cry because that much emotion is not expected in an animated film," he said.

Sally Lancaster said she had cried during an animated movie.

"I cried during Dumbo," she said. "When they take him away from his mum it really hits home."

Mr Moore said he was happy to see The Notebook on the list.

"If The Notebook wasn't on the list it would not be accurate," he said.
