ANGELS visited a 70-year-old Maryborough woman on the weekend, surprising her with a $15,000 gift.

The widowed pensioner was left without a car after hers was damaged beyond repair in a crash a month ago.

She spent weeks without a vehicle and had little independence before a replacement arrived in past days.

But in a strange twist of fate, and before June Tonkin even had time to run the car through the automatic wash, she was announced as the winner of a new Barina as part of a Greg's Supa IGA Maryborough Plaza promotion.

An emotional Ms Tonkin said it was her first time claiming anything of significance after many years of entering competitions.

"It was raining when they announced the winner and I was standing inside the shop and could not hear the announcement," Ms Tonkin said.

"But another lady was relaying what was said to us and when she said my name I couldn't believe it."

While not yet able to definitively say what she planned to do now she had two cars, the pensioner said she was grateful to the store.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor Gerard O'Connell presented the Maryborough woman with her prize and said the goodwill act from the IGA store was typical of the business owners.

"I want to commend Derek and Greg (from Supa IGA Maryborough Plaza) for what they have done since taking over that store...they have done a phenomenal service to the area," Cr O'Connell said.
