IT SOUNDS like a scene from a movie.

A woman is running an errand to pick up some items for a birthday party when she sees an unusual billboard.

As she gets closer, she sees that it reads "will you marry me?" with her man standing beneath it, holding a dozen red roses and a ring.

This was the sight that greeted Gail Witt-Parry, in a very public marriage proposal from Myles Symons in Hervey Bay.

Myles planned the proposal down to the day - being exactly one year since he and Gail first met in person, following an initial courtship on an online dating site.

After a number of trips from New Zealand to Australia to visit Gail, Myles finally sold up his business and his home and relocated to Hervey Bay and set up his new company, the Hot Shot Group.

In keeping with his flamboyant style, Myles said he "wanted everyone to join in the fun," with his proposal.

"I wanted to do it in true style," he said.

It could have been a risky move for Myles, with wedding planner and blogger Nina Callaway warning against public proposals.

"If scriptwriters are to be believed, every wedding proposal takes place in front of a thousand people," she writes, before advising people to keep it personal.

"After all, you've got the rest of your lives to tell other people about your marriage, but you've only got one engagement moment."

Myles, though, was extremely confident that Gail would love his public demonstration of romance.

"I wouldn't have done it if I wasn't 99% sure," he said.
