LLEYTON Hewitt's demise at the hands of Serbian Novak Djokovic has ended Australia's medal hopes in the tennis singles at the London Olympics.

Djokovic took the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 but it was not until the third set that the former world number one looked comfortable against the ever resilient Australian.

Hewitt looked to be on course for a major upset after taking the first set in 40 minutes.

Djokovic and Hewitt then duked it out for much of the second set, the pair trading breaks of serve deep in the set.

However, Hewitt faltered with a tie-break in site, handing Djokovic the set in 45 minutes.

The final set was a walk-over for Djokovic, the Serbian twice breaking the Hewitt serve and leaving Australia medal-less in the tennis singles.
