IT CAN be hard getting people to talk about mental illness.

So it helps when you have a groovy 1959 Austin Healey Sprite to break the ice.

Luke Lukess is in the middle of an epic 6000km solo road trip from Cairns to Hobart in support of SANE, an organisation which helps depression sufferers.

Mr Lukess arrived in Mackay yesterday and held a meet and greet with locals at the Hog's Breath Cafe.

He has been compiling stories of people's personal battles against depression throughout his journey, which will eventually be turned into a short film.

Mr Lukess said he hoped the film would help people feel more comfortable talking about their issues.

"I've dealt closely with friends who have had depression," he said.

"The stories aim to show people there is a light at the end of the tunnel."

Mr Lukess' goal is to raise $5000 for the SANE call centre - often the first point of contact for sufferers of depression.

He began his journey in Cairns on May 4 and is due to arrive in Hobart on May 28.
