Offspring cast keen on new twists

IT'S all roses and sunshine in the new series of Offspring, for a little while anyway.

So far in the Network Ten drama series, Asher Keddie's Silver Logie winning performance as the slightly neurotic obstetrician Nina Proudman has centred on her unlucky love streak.

But has Nina finally found happiness with her handsome co-worker, Dr Patrick Reid?

"They're in a happy place," said Matthew Le Nevez, who plays Patrick.

"It's good to be able to have a little bit of lightness to come out for both of them.

"They're committed to each other, but obviously with the Proudman family and all the dramas she goes through there's a lot to deal with. For a little while Patrick is a strong foundation for her."

So it sounds like viewers will have to enjoy Nina's romantic bliss while they can.

It certainly wouldn't be the Offspring way if Nina and Patrick got married and lived happily ever after.

"When you're making a romantic comedy you want to keep things fresh," he said.

"Inevitably there's going to be a bit of make-up or break-up."

That's not to say Nina will be dumping the attractive anaesthetist anytime soon.

While Le Nevez must remain tight-lipped about the future of his character, he can shed some light on the next phase of Nina and Patrick's relationship.

"As in any relationship they commit to each other and after a little while you realise you might have to go through that next step of being vulnerable with someone and really intimate," he said.

"Some of Patrick's past does come back up, and he does have to deal with that throughout the series.

"The writers have done a great job allowing that to evolve, and allowing the past to be kind of real.

"I'm looking forward to people seeing that. It makes it more than just a back story; it becomes part of what he has to go through to grow."

The new series of Offspring also continues to delve more deeply into the stories of the ensemble characters, such as Dr Clegg's (Lachy Hulme) feelings for Cherie (Deborah Mailman) and Zara's (Jane Harber) pregnancy to Nina's younger brother Jimmy (Richard Davies).

"One of the benefits of being able to go to a third series is the writers can start to try different avenues," Le Nevez said.

"In this series some amazing things happen with Zara. She goes through an incredible journey. I'm sure a lot of people are going to love that."

Hopefully as much as the cast enjoys making the show.

"The other day I was having a crazy laugh in a fantasy scene with Lachy Hume, Deb Mailman, and Kat Stewart," Le Nevez said.

"I almost couldn't stop giggling."

Musician Clare Bowditch will join the cast later in the series.
