THE Western Bulldogs did late club great Charlie Sutton proud with a tough 13.17 (95) to 8.9 (56) victory last night at Etihad Stadium.

The Bulldogs farewelled their sole premiership-winning coach just 48 hours earlier and were inspired by captain Matthew Boyd, who had 34 touches (including 22 in the first half), Mitch Wallis (29) and Daniel Cross (26), while in defence Bob Murphy (32) and Easton Wood (20) were superb.

Ayce Cordy kicked two goals for the Dogs and was a strong target in attack, while Tory Dickson who managed four majors, was dangerous.

Port's best were Brad Ebert who had 3 23 touches and Matthew Broadbent with 26 possessions.

Making the Power's defeat harder to handle were injuries to midfielder Hamish Hartlett (torn right hamstring), Paul Stewart (left hamstring), Jacob Surjan (concussion) and Jackson Trengove (dislocated finger).

A bump from Port's Matt Thomas on Tom Liberatore is likely to be looked at.

The win brings the Dogs' season-winning tally to five, one ahead of the Power.
