BRUCE Bredner is proving the old saying 'you're only as old as you feel' as he embarks on an adventure that is nothing short of astonishing.

At 74, he is about to fly to Fiji to swim between several islands.

Billed as a 'Fiji Swim Safari', Mr Bredner will spend seven days swimming an average of 3km per day in what he describes as an experience that "will be better than a normal holiday".

"I can't help myself, I just love swimming," Mr Bredner said.

A very familiar face at the Woolgoolga Pool and at beaches across the Northern Beaches, Mr Bredner swims almost daily whether it be in the pool, at Woolgoolga Beach or out at Red Rock.

He has previously swum long distances in England, Scotland, Ireland and Honolulu, as well as at rivers and beaches right across Australia.

"I used to cycle and run but I've had two hip replacements, a knee done and also a shoulder so I stick to swimming now.

"It's something I've always just loved, since I was a kid."

He has also been an active member of the Woolgoolga Surf Life Saving Club.

During his trip he will be swimming to local reefs within the Yasawa Islands with a bit of sightseeing mixed in. The least he will swim in a day is 1.5km, the most a whopping 4.2km.

"I'm really looking forward to it."

Mr Bredner jets off on his adventure early next month.
