RESIDENTS can breathe easy with the Casuarina bushfire coming to a stand still, but with only 2km to spare.
A change in wind direction has been in NSW Rural Fire Service's favour as they continue to calm the flames.
It has claimed no more than 95 hectares with no koala fatalities reported.
Tweed Coast Rd is still closed.
A raging bushfire on the Tweed Coast has claimed 95 hectares of a national park with a team of 36 firefighters currently trying to control the blaze.
NSW Rural Fire Service got the 000 call shortly after 6.00am when the fire broke out west of Casuarina.
It has forced the closure of Tweed Coast Rd and will remain closed until the area has been thoroughly inspected for falling trees.
Inspector and Spokesperson for the Rural Fire Service, Ben Shepherd, said they are having problems with strong winds and spotting.
"In the past hour we have had a number of spot fires develop which we are trying to contain," Insp Shepherd said.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service are currently at the scene of the fire.
Endangered koalas inhabit the national park where the fire is spreading.
"I haven't heard any intel of koalas affected by the fires," Insp Shepherd said.
"We need to establish new containment lines so it doesn't grow closer to the surrounding towns," he said.
"It is a good reminder for the public that bushfire season has started, and the danger is real."
The road will also remain closed for safety purposes, for both fire fighters and public, as there is thick smoke surrounding the area.
